For eight weeks this summer, Fridays at the Muslim Community Care Foundation (MCCF) became an opportunity for local children to gather, have fun, and get to know one another. MCCF’s Summer Youth Program offered a weekly two-hour session from 5 to 7 p.m., bringing children together at the foundation’s office for an assortment of recreational, creative, and social activities. The program was created to give young people a regular place to spend their summer evenings while encouraging them to form relationships with other children in the community. Each Friday brought a new activity and a different way for participants to interact. Sessions included cookie decorating, movie nights, games, and other hands-on activities that gave children plenty of opportunities to participate and enjoy themselves.
One of the most valuable aspects of the program was the opportunity for children to meet peers outside their usual circles. Group games and introductory activities helped break the ice, while collaborative challenges encouraged participants to communicate and work together. Through these shared experiences, children were able to develop friendships while learning how to cooperate and engage with others. Having the program take place every week also allowed those relationships to grow. Children who initially arrived not knowing many of the other participants gradually became familiar with the group. Seeing one another regularly created a comfortable atmosphere where friendships could develop naturally. Each Friday became another chance to catch up with familiar faces, welcome new participants, and continue building connections.
The program also brought together children from different age groups and backgrounds. This created an environment where participants could learn from one another and enjoy activities together despite having different interests. The variety of programming meant there was something for everyone, whether a child preferred games, creative projects, movies, or simply spending time with others. For MCCF, the initiative was about more than filling a few hours during the summer. It was an opportunity to create a stronger sense of community among young people and provide families with a welcoming space where their children could socialize. Experiences like these can help children strengthen skills such as communication, cooperation, and teamwork while giving them the chance to develop relationships in a positive environment.
By the final session, the children had shared weeks of activities, conversations, games, and laughter. The program gave participants the chance to leave their regular routines behind, try new things, and build relationships that may continue after the summer. MCCF’s Summer Youth Program demonstrated how simple, consistent opportunities to bring young people together can have a lasting impact. By creating a space centered on participation, friendship, and community, MCCF helped make the summer a memorable one for the children who took part.
